PFLAG Las Cruces receives national award

BULLETIN REPORT

Members of PFLAG Las Cruces were in Kansas City, Missouri, in October to attend the “We Are the Change: The 2019 PFLAG National Convention” and to receive a chapter award from PFLAG National. The award recognizes PFLAG Las Cruces’ contributions to the national PFLAG threefold mission of support, education and advocacy, and was given to only three of PFLAG chapters among the more than 400 nationwide, as Las Cruces joined Boston and Denver in receiving the award.

“We are so thrilled to receive this award for our work with LGBTQ+ asylum seekers,” said PFLAG Las Cruces Chapter President Ryan Steinmetz. “I am thankful to our PFLAG Las Cruces board and volunteers who helped put our Rainbow Refugee Project together, and for our community partners who supported our efforts. And I am incredibly proud and grateful to the eight LGBTQ asylum seekers that we have served from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Uganda. Their courage to leave all they have known to find a safe place where they could be who they are and love who they love is awe-inspiring.”

In addition to receiving the award, PFLAG Las Cruces members joined PFLAGers from across the country at workshops and plenary sessions on a wide array of topics, including building safer schools, supporting transgender and gender-expansive youth, fundraising strategies, dialoguing about LGBTQ people in faith communities and more.

PFLAG Las Cruces also actively provides educational presentations, support groups and resources to LGBTQ individuals, their families and any organization that would provide an open and affirming space for all people.

PFLAG is one of the United States’ first and largest organizations for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their families, and allies. With more than 400 chapters and 200,000 members and supporters across America, PFLAG is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed.

PFLAG Las Cruces was founded in 1995 by Susan Brown and William Soules.
